Instructions on How to Prepare a Hard Drive Before Shipping it For Data Recovery Service
You’ll need:
- Anti-static electricity bag
- Bubble plastic wrap
- A small cardboard box
- Tape (not shown)
(As shown in graphic)
- Have a technician, or if you feel comfortable doing so, carefully remove the failed hard drive from your computer. When removing the drive make sure to discharge any static electricity in your body by touching a grounded piece of metal with your bare hands every few minutes. Pay attention not to touch the circuit board on the back of your hard disk. Hard drives should be handled by the edges only. Also, do not subject drive to strong shocks or vibrations, either during removal or transportation. Failing to follow these tips may decrease the likelihood of your hard drive data being recovered. NOTE: If you are unable to remove the drive such as in a Laptop computer, send the whole laptop. For data recovery from RAID systems, have your engineer remove and label each drive RAID drive with the sequence number as they are being removed, if unable to remove send the whole RAID system to us.
As soon as the drive has been removed put it inside an Anti-Static bag to protect from damage by static electricity. If you don’t have one available you should be able to obtain one at your local computer or electronics store. Make sure to tape the open end of the bag so that the hard drive does not come out. Do not use just any plastic bag to wrap your hard drive, as this type of material also builds up static electricity. Increase your data recovery chances by properly protecting your drive.- Cover the hard drive with bubble plastic wrap. Use enough bubble wrap so that it goes around drive two to three inches on all sides
- Put the covered drive inside the cardboard box. It should fit snugly. If it does not add more packaging material, such as extra bubble wrap or peanuts, so that it won’t move sideways or top to bottom during shipment.
- Enclose a printout copy of data recovery confirmation email you got from us showing your hard drive data recovery case number.
- Use enough courier quality tape to seal your box so that it won’t open in transit.
- Write the word “FRAGILE” in red letters using a thick permanent marker around all sides of box.
- Attach the prepaid UPS label that we email to you to the package
- Take the package to your nearest UPS drop off location
- We recommend getting a drop off receipt as this is your proof that the package was dropped off for shipping
- As soon as our hard drive data recovery labs receives your shipment you will notified by email
